Bring a burst of color to your tank with Super Red Bristlenose Plecos – ideal for most aquarium sizes! They are such a beautiful colour with a lovely personality, and great at keeping up with tank cleanliness. Read on to find out why you should grab some of these great fish to add in your tank, why we love them so much and have chosen to specialize in breeding these amazing creatures.

The Bristlenose Pleco is one of the best “algae eaters” and all-round scavengers in the aquarium hobby. They stay a lot smaller than other common species of Plecostomus, growing to a maximum size of 5 inches. These plecos are a robust, solid fish, which are hard and armored to the touch.

Ancistrus are usually purchased to clean our aquarium glass and decorations of the dreaded bio film algae that can look so unsightly, keeping everything sparkling – yes, they do an amazing job at working for us as the top clean-up crew, but they really do have a huge appetite and each fish should be fed half its own body weight every day with foods such as green beans, boiled mushrooms & courgette along with a whole range of different boiled vegetables would be enjoyed and appreciated by your Bristlenose Pleco.

Drift wood is also an essential when keeping these fish as they rasp on it and absorb nutrients in the resins of the wood that aid their digestive system. Without it they can go off their food and potentially develop a sickness. They particularly enjoy Redmoor wood as well as Cholla wood. These fish really do have a monster appetite so please feed them daily.

(*Please note that Bristlenose are mostly vegetarian so do not feed them too much protein and try to aim for no more than 10% of their overall diet.)

Here’s a list of foods our Plecos love and receive daily and how we prepare them:

All vegetables are boiled to remove pesticides and make them softer and easier for the pleco to eat.

Our fish love:

Green beans, courgettes, mushrooms, carrots, potatoes, sweet peppers, cauliflower, broccoli, parsnips, algae wafers, sinking catfish pellets and once every 2 weeks mussels or prawns as a treat or when a female is getting ready to spawn and she is developing eggs.

Males can be territorial once they are sexually mature but fighting never really results in injuries as the fish are built like little tanks. That said, each adult should have its own cave which is especially important when breeding these beautiful creatures.

Since these fish eat a lot of food, it is inevitable that they will create a lot of waste and bio load, so you will need adequate filtration to handle this — please do not purchase these fish from us if your filter and aquarium isn’t properly cycled and mature.

Bristlenose Plecos are our specialty species along with being our pride and joy, so please respect them and be responsible fish keepers as they are awesome creatures. We are happy to make special quantity packs, so reach out to us to further arrange.

As always, please do your research to make sure you are getting the right fish to add to your setup. If you have any questions regarding fish keeping etc., please feel free to message me as we have over 30 years of experience with breeding and keeping hundreds of different species!
